Ep. 496: Make the Most of the First 3 Weeks, Use an Alarm & Cope with Exploitation of Obligers
We discuss research suggesting that during the first three weeks with strangers in
a new environment (such as a cruise or college), we have a special window for
making friends. We also talk about why setting an alarm can alleviate restlessness
and anxiety, and we address a question from an Obliger about how to deal with
the fact that members of her family don’t do their share.

My husband's grandfather kept those diaries as well- although he generally did single year diaries... he recorded every penny he spent each day: $.03 newspaper, .10 bus fare, $1.00 pork chops, etc. as well as messages to his family: ie: "And how are you , little Brucie Wayne, on this, the second day of your life." ❤❤❤

I disagree with the tone of your message that seems to imply that in the end, what seems loss of time might serve something”productive”. I am so happy when I play video games, that is what I want to do most of my time until I die. That and loving my husband. Follow your bliss, productive or not. I’m 62 years old. I feel gratitude for being in a lifestyle which enables me to play so much video games. After my husband, it is the second thing that fills my heart with joy. Thank you life for video games. And thank you life, for the talents of all the artists and techies who create them.

Difficulties to say no remind me of my absolute favourite line in (not just) the first episode of Friends. When asked if she would help with Ross' move Phoebe answers: "I wish I could but I don't want to." Yeah, that makes me chuckle every time I think of it because I like a twist in one sentence but also the confidence to say no. Great writing.

It’s not just the pleasure of giving, it’s also taking on some of the labor of deciding. A strong opinion takes a lot of pressure off. Optimally a dinner proposal has at least one concrete opinion, but one element flexible, like I would love Italian food tonight, then the other person can say great, I just bought basil, let’s have pesto. Or, I want chicken, great, let’s make kebabs.

Be reasonable, sometimes its no. Its not negativity, its just sometimes the answer is no. Don't create a monster that wants things said exactly how they want to hear them. They have to go to school and deal with others and eventually they grow up. They really need to know how to deal with the word no.

A lot of parents just correct the negative behavior and don’t give suggestions on what to do instead. They’re a new human with big emotions. All they know is scream. So instead of “stop screaming” parents can say “I can’t help you if i don’t know what’s wrong. Screaming won’t tell me what’s wrong, your words do”. It only works after they calmed down tho, hard to listen when you’re screeching

You need to get hold of some Wainwright's guides to where you're walking. They are AMAZING! And most people wear everyday socks with walking socks on top. Remember a tick-removing tool, long trousers (pants) if you're walking in long grass to avoid getting any ticks in the first place. Yes it might rain, but it also might be scorching so just think Girl Guide/Girl Scout and Be Prepared!! Hope you have a wonderful time.
